O.K. I just wanted to say that after driving around New Orleans yesterday and seeing the devastation, I feel just a little silly about worrying about how they are going to remove the refrigerators.
I'm staying with my folks on the north shore. Their yard looked like something out of Alice in Wonderland. Huge trees down everywhere that you had to climb under or over to get to the house. All those trees down and not one hit the house. My parents internet just came back online a few seconds ago and thus I'm on the net right now. New Orleans is not completely navigable. There are still sections that are so bad off that no one is allowed in them.
Glad to hear that things are slowly getting back to normal for you. I suppose the Ponchetrain Causeway has been open - that's good considering that I could only imagine it will take years to rebuild I-10.
I saw that the police beating was at the Absinthe House in the French Quarter - pretty fucked up.
Does anyone know how lazy police in New Orleans are? There is no way in hell they summoned up enough energy to beat up a man for no reason. He did something. (I can't believe I'm defending the New Orleans Police, but...) Some of the N.O.P.D. took off and some committed suicide. It had to be a stressful time. Maybe the media should back off a little from the ones who stayed and held New Orleans together this past month. It would also be nice if the media stopped stirring the pot of racial tension and left us alone to heal a little. After 9/11 the N.Y.P.D. were made into superheros, but the media (probably since they don't live here and are just bloodthirsty for stories) can't seem to stop ripping our N.O.P.D. apart. Be nice or go away!
Just a note on my last comment. "Be nice or go away!", is a sign that hangs in many bars in New Orleans. (...and I was referring to the media in New Orleans, not bloggers on my site.)
It's interesting about the drunk Nawlin creature. Just like the evil numbers on LOST, mine came up last night in a bottle of gin, half of which I killed for no apparent reason. I was gentlemenly enough -- my wife made an excellent dinner and we had a nice evening, but nevertheless, I got bleedin wasted.
It's my pattern: Every six months I lose it. I get LOST.
Had I been the man wandering around New Orleans asking pigs questions, they mosdef would've pummeled me -- instead of the other gentleman. As I write this letter, I viddy Ned's outstanding beard, and I think to myself: I am s-o-o-o-o hungover. I touch the beard and my headache goes away.
Also, Mr. Corwin, I do not want to wrestle you. I was very drunk last night. Gin & Blog is like milk and lemons.
When I woke up, just minutes ago, I looked to see that no one was murdered -- that's how fucking crispy I was. The kind of drunk where you beat the wife, strangle the kitties and rape the neighbors. Fortunately, for all the aforementioned beings - as I said before - I was...nice(?)
I really would kill myself but I'm afraid Arthur Schopenhauer won't allow it. Somehow I envision a room where people vote on your demise. "Motion to kill Mr. Shannon?" I move. I second. I'm going back to bed.
It is unquestionably a different perspective on New Orleans than what is seen on television. Obviously, the glorifiable stories are what is reported, rather than the more realistic stuff.
And you're right, no one gives the NOPD credit for what good was done. The way it is reported, the cops are misbehaving as badly as the looters (which I'm sure was also exaggerated.) We should know better than to trust CNN by now.
I'm glad your parents' house survived, as did your feisty blue car.
Maybe nobody said anything about misconduct on the part of NYC officers b/c there was no misconduct. They tried to protect the citizens instead of handing out beat downs.
As far as the racial sit. in NO, I guess they should have thought of that before they beat the living crap out of that guy.
Seriously, officers have to deal with drunken behaviour in the Quarter on a daily basis...I doubt that this was the first time they had come in contact with a non-compliant individual--I bet any amount of moeny that they don't normally do things like what was on that video.
I can accept that they were stressed and had a lot on their minds. Having said that, they are supposed to be able to keep their heads in a crisis; if they can't do that they need to find a new line of work...
I am sure I speak for everyone when I say that we could be doing a lot worse. The pride of SW Louisiana State's football has obviously swept the whole state, and I don't think anyone's thinking much about their own plights as much as they once were.

I'm glad your car survived, at least. Have your folks been able to return yet?
Can you pretty much drive anywhere?
Is the city completely navigable?

To me, a cop's fist...is like a kiss from God.
